Valérie Thérèse Bart (she/her)
Costume Designer, Scenic Designer

Yonkers, NY

Valérie Thérèse Bart is a proud self-proclaimed “Franco-VietnAmericaine.” Born in France to Vietnamese refugee parents, she and her family eventually made their way to the US. Costume, and sometimes scenic, designer for theatre, opera and dabbling a bit in film/TV, she sees this as the perfect way into storytelling—through characters with what they are wearing and why, and the environment they find themselves in. It makes one delve into the psychology and the thought process behind choices. Good designers approach a script as a director and actor would by asking the questions of who/what/when/where/how and why. And it makes complete sense to her that this can combines all of her favorite things: storytelling (comics/RPG books), clothing/expression (fashion design), movement/choreography (dance), mood/theme/score (music). Valérie hopes to create work that is collaborative, open-minded and truly diverse because she comes from multi-ethnic/multi-cultural backgrounds and sees the world as such. It is now more important than ever to have an all-inclusive way of telling stories and dismantle the systems that have created gatekeeping. For so long BIPOC bodies and voices have either been used to advance white supremacy, pigeon-holed and segregated from mainstream, or cast aside and ignored. She firmly believes that the work we do is human representation at its core and if we are all storytellers, then we should do so in a respectable and empathetic manner. She earned her BA from University of California in Los Angeles, her MFA from The Yale School of Drama, is a member of IATSE United Scenic Artists Local 829, as well as Wingspace Theatrical Design. Valérie currently resides in New York with her loving husband Rick, their baby Étienne, and their awesome black cat, HoBart.

Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew (she/her)
Lighting Designer, Projection Designer, Puppetry, Devised work and collaboration
New York, NY

I am an award-winning lighting and projection designer for theatre, dance, opera, musical and music performances, installations and now digital performances. I aim to create a visual environment that is organically integrated into the landscape and language of the production. Furthermore, I have extensive experience working on new, original and ensemble productions. NY Times described them as “clever” and “inventive”. Of all the genres I have designed for, I really enjoy the challenges in designing for operas. Jennifer Tipton said, “lighting is music for the eyes” which I wholeheartedly agree particularly with opera where there is true interdependency between words, music and voice, and visuals in storytelling. Recent operas: White Snake Projects’ Alice in the Pandemic (digital premiere), The Industry’s Sweet Land (premiere and immersive), Kamala Sankaram’s Thumbprint (world premiere), HK Gruber's Gloria - A Pig Tale with Alan Gilbert and Doug Fitch, Schubert’s Fierrabras with Leon Botstein, Gotham Opera’s Orientale, Jonathan Dawe’s Cosi fan tutti, Peter Winkler’s Fox Fables with Rhoda Levine, Tarik O’Regan’s The Wanton Sublime and David Cote’s The Companion (both semi-stage premiere), Aaron Siegel’s Brother Brother (world premiere), Handel’s Alcina with Pocket Opera NY, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Isabel Milenski. Aside from designing, I am also a puppetry artist who have originated, designed, and directed contemporary puppetry performances. Most recent is Matthew Welch’s And Here We Are which is composed as shadow puppet opera. Puppetry is a holistic art form which really informs and speaks to my approach as both an artist and a designer.

Yi Zhao (he/him)
Lighting Designer
Berlin, Germany

I am a China-born, France-raised, U.S.-educated lighting designer. I am currently based in Berlin, Germany, and work primarily in the U.S. and Europe, across opera, theater, music, and dance. Informed by a rigorous background in art photography and a passion for music, I often think of lighting design as four-dimensional composition: sculptural, pictorial, and musical at the same time; an all-encompassing vehicle for a communal event. My work is grounded in dramaturgy and driven by the occasion; it encompasses a wide range of forms and aesthetics developed through enduring collaborations.
